Is your material ready for Mastering?
Mixing
To begin the mastering process, the finalized mixes will be needed. You may have already derived the final mixes. On occasion, it is beneficial for the mastering engineer (ME) to suggest a mix change that will improve the final product. If this is possible, it is ideal for the mix engineer and ME to be in contact.
Once all mix files are finalized they will need to be delivered to the ME in the highest quality format in which they were created. i.e. If the production was 48kHz 24bit, deliver your final mix files as 48kHz 24bit (nothing lower or higher). More than likely your files will be in WAVE (.wav) format. In the event they are not, contact your ME directly.
Metadata
Mastering is more than audio processing. The metadata embedded into your final master files is just as important as the audio content itself. Having correct, properly formatted metadata is vital. All the details matter: spelling, capitalization, punctuation, etc. This data should be identical to the information you will enter when you’re ready to distribute your music via streaming service, digital download, physical release, etc. To help with this process use the following links to deliver your information to your ME. release
All mastering is finished and you’re ready to release your material to the public. Discuss with your ME what formats you will be releasing to ensure your production is optimized for that format.
Inside the Final Master Pack you received from your ME there will be a specific file pack for each format. Below are some recommendations for companies that will either distribute or produce physical products for your release.
Download - Bandcamp
Streaming - Distro Kid
CD - Disk Makers
Cassette - National Audio Company
Vinyl - Furnace Record Pressings
For further recommendations for non-US companies or any other questions contact your ME directly.
